CLUB HISTORY

From small acorns...

The seed of Borehamwood RFC was sewn on a drunken morning just minutes after England won the Rugby World Cup. A group of rugby nuts got chatting about how come a place like Borehamwood never had a team. Maybe it was the euphoria of the victory, maybe it was the desire to see a local team, maybe it was just the beer talking but a decision was made to do something about it.

After lots of hard graft by the committee, help from the local council, donations from kind sponsors and a summer training camp of sorts, on the 28th August 2003 Borehamwood RFC played its first ever game against Old Albanians V. Another friendly followed against Old Grammarians III before we embarked on our first season and what a season it turned out to be. We lost out first game but then went on a run of 8 victories. Unfortunately injuries, a couple of decisions against us and one dodgy home referee saw us lose some games towards end of the season, leaving us in 2nd position. Considering this was our first season together and some of the team had never played rugby before this was a major achievement.

The club is based on a concept on which those who have come together seem to base their lives, “Friendship, rugby and beer.” We are a friendly bunch of lads from all walks of life whose origins span the world, English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Kiwi, Aussie, Saffa and Scouse.

If you are looking for a team to play for or to watch, please get in touch with us and you'll be made to feel most welcome. Even if you belong to another team you will be made to feel most welcome, hopefully after we have beat you on the field.
